The National Research Programme "Stem Cells and Regenerative Med-icine" (NRP 63) aims to promote basic research in Switzerland and recruit promising young scientists to this field.

The high-calibre research in cell and developmental biology in Switzerland should provide a sound basis for performing internationally recognized work in stem cell biology.

The NRP 63 has the following three goals:

  • support basic research on stem cells and regenerative medicine,
  • encourage scientists with an excellent track record in developmental and cell biology to engage in this field,
  • recruit and train young scientists in this field.

The ultimate goal of stem cells research is to provide applications in regenerative medicine in the long-term. For research on legal and ethical questions in stem cell biology, current concepts and existing laws should be adapted in view of future developments.

In general, the programme should enhance the international visibility of Swiss research in stem cell and regenerative medicine.

The programme was endowed with 10 mio Swiss Francs for a research duration of 5 years.
